My daughter’s bike was stolen from her school last Friday, 25-09-09. She came home in tears. The school do not have anything on their CCTV and having toured the local area I can not see it. Can I ask for people in the Canford Heath, Oakdale areas to keep a look out for it please? It’s quite distinctive, as its pink, with the word Rhino in black on the bars. It has number 8 pool ball style dust caps on the wheels and a black padlock wrapped around it, unfortunately not securing it. I think I have a note of the serial number somewhere, but finding it may be a problem. <!-- /* Style Definitions */ p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {mso-style-parent:""; margin:0cm; margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman";} @page Section1 {size:612.0pt 792.0pt; margin:72.0pt 90.0pt 72.0pt 90.0pt; mso-header-margin:36.0pt; mso-footer-margin:36.0pt; mso-paper-source:0;} div.Section1 {page:Section1;} --> If anyone spots it can they please contact the police on 01202 222222

I have been away for a while due to health problems so have not looked at the Watchers site for some time. Imagine my dismay when I logged on only to find that the functions like the forums, chat and blogs appear not to have been used by anyone for some considerable time.   Are there no longer any problems to resolve? it would be nice but I somehow doubt it. is everyone satisfied with their lot?, again I doubt it. Is Neighbourhood Watch dying a death? I certainly hope not. Where are you all? lets see some renewed action on the very good and worthwhile site.   Len

Secure your home
Burglary is a crime of opportunity - don't give burglars a chance. According to the British Crime Survey 2007-2008 36% of burglaries occur in properties with unlocked doors and windows.

On 4 February 2009 the Home Office announced a package of crime prevention measures that included:

    * a new £20 million fund for local crime prevention initiatives and targeted support to homes and businesses — including measures to strengthen home security, focused on the 14% of homes that still don't have window locks and the 18% that don't have adequate front doors

    *new home security pages on the Home Office website http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/crime-victims/how-you-can-prevent-crime/secure-your-home/ will offer a single source of information and advice on home security. The web pages include a new online personalised home security self assessment, 'How secure is your home?', that allows people to grade the security of their home in a few minutes. It then provides simple advice about how they can improve it and who they can contact for help.

Just over £8 million will be spent on targeted action to support people most vulnerable to burglary, joining with the voluntary and community sector through a Safer Homes Fund, joint work with organisations with expertise in reaching older people, and the National Students Union (NUS) to reach students, Neighbourhood Watch will receive £1 million funding to strengthen their role and support the targeted work.

Keep your home safe

To help you keep your home safe, the Home Office has put together a useful pack of information about securing your property containing information such as:

    * Keep it safe. Keep it hidden. Keep it locked - advice booklet
    *a guide to home security
    * a self assessment checklist
    * how to beat the bogus caller
    * Neighbourhood Watch leaflet
    * guidance for private sector tenants
    * ‘Before you go out’ checklist
    * The Policing Pledge

You can order your home pack by calling 0800 456 1213 and quoting 'burglary pack'. Those who order the pack will also receive a discount voucher for home security supplies at a major DIY retailer. Alternatively, you can download documents from the pack by visiting

Spring Security Advice
With the clocks going forward last Sunday (29th March), Suffolk Police is urging residents to keep their property sate.

As the evenings get light and the weather improves, criminals can take advantage of people spending more time outdoors and of people leaving windows and doors open.

However, as Ben Cook the Inspector for Community Safety explains, there are simple measures, which can protect people’s property. “It may be tempting to leave windows and doors open as it gets light and warmer, but this is an invitation for a burglar to take advantage of easy access to your home. Whether you are inside or outside in the garden, keep doors and windows secure so only you can get in and out.”

“The same applies to your garage or shed – once you have removed the lawnmower, tools or barbeque you are using, lock it behind you. Never leave items of value unattended in your garden, and don’t leave them on display through a window either. Mesh or bars can be fixed on shed and garage windows to conceal your property and deter criminals from breaking in.”

Keep vehicles in secure garages where available, or parked in an open, well lit area. Keep hedges and shrubs cut back and fences, gates and walls in good repair. Make sure items such as bicycles, ladders and motorised vehicles that can be locked, are locked. Lock smaller items in cabinets and always keep keys safe and out of sight. Houses, sheds and garages can also be alarmed.”

“I would also urge you to security mark items – Suffolk Police hold regular property marking events around the county, or equipment can be purchased to do this yourself. Take photos of any valuable items, these pictures could help trace them in the event that they are stolen.”

“Property can also be registered with a free database called Immobilise. This national system is used by most police forces, including Suffolk – all you need to do is enter the serial number of your phone, computer, MP3 player, bike or anything else with such a code, and update the system if it is lost or stolen. If the police seize stolen property, or an item is found, officers can search the database to find out whom the items belongs to, and your property will be returned. You can also use the system to find out if a second-hand item you want to buy is stolen.” To register go to the web site, www.immobilise.com and follow the instructions.

Any suspicious activity should be reported to police on 01473 613500 or 999 if a crime is in progress, or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Further information on home security can be found on our website www.suffolk.police.uk . Some districts and borough councils offer home security checks and upgrades, which are free or discounted to certain members of the community. Shed alarms are available from police stations, and free advice on home security is available from your local Crime Reduction Officer on 01473 603500.
