Church lead theft warning

POLICE have urged Peterborough residents to keep at eye out for metal thieves targeting churches after the price of lead rose.
Sergeant Alan Bradshaw said: "Last time this happened, many of our churches were targeted, and the lead was stolen in large quantities from their roofs.

"Please can everyone be on the look out for suspicious activity in and around church yards, and report anything that looks out of the ordinary by calling Cambridgeshire police on 0845 456 4564."

Only this week, police hailed Operation Saruman, a drive to crack down on metal thefts across the county, a success.

Since it began in September 2007, have made more than 100 arrests, partner agencies have issued more than £7,000 in fines, and a new reporting system has been set up where police notify scrap metal dealers of all material stolen in the county in the previous 24 hours.
