If you have been a victim of crime please write about your experiences here so maybe it can help other people avoid being victims too. Alternatively, if you are involved in NW and have a real-life story of Watch then add it to this blog.

I belong to a NHW scheme and apart from the usual parking problems we have been plagued for some time by graffiti artist and it appears that nearlly every wall or available surface is covered in the unsightly scribble. We have complained to the local authority and to the local Police but to no avail. We are thinking of now setting up a team of volunteers to go round the area and pait out this unsightly mess but do not know how we stang legally. Would we be adding to the criminal damage already caused. No one seems to ne able to tell us. I have heard about anti vandal paint that once painted on a surface resists graffiti but our local authority claims it is much to expensive and outside their budget limitations. Has anyone found a reasonable solution to this increasing problem

Yesterday our local youth center was attacked by kids who probly came from outside - graffiti and bottles smashed.
It looks like a war zone.
Happy Christmas!

Hi Andrew. I am not sure about these bloggs or their proper use but here goes anyway.

I am a member and street co-ordinator of a NW scheme in North London and like you we have been plagued with graffiti and criminal damage, particularly in an underpass that runs from a parade of shops (many now closed down) to our local hospital so it is still very much in use.

Vandals have in the past smashed all the lighting, covered it in graffiti and was using it as a public toilet.

Although the Police patrol it as often as they can no one responsible has every been caught. We lobbied the local council and got the same reply that you did but with the aid of our local Crime Prevention Officer who did a survey on the area and submitted his report to them they began to take some notice.

We kept on at them and eventually they installed anti vandal lights and cleared all the graffiti. I do believe that they used this anti graffiti paint as whatever they did the graffiti has not returned. My message is don't be disheartened, keep on at your local authority and if possible get your local Crime Prevention Officer battling for you as well. This is good, I will come back again.

Another good day for the burglars. Three successful burglaries reported and one attempt.

One was effected by forcing the front door, entering and stealing cash and jewelry, one by the offenders gaining entry through an insecure ground floor side window and stealing property and one by the offenders forcing a rear ground floor kitchen window, entering and stealing a DVD player and an electric blender.

The attempt was made by trying to force the rear patio doors with a spade taken from an insecure shed. Proper locks and basic security would have perhaps prevented all these crimes.

Yesterday a robbery occurred when two young girls was approached by two white youths one aged about 16 years and the other about 17/18 years who threatened them with violence and stole a mobile phone.

They are believed to come from the travelers site set up in the grounds of a local derelict industrial estate.

Unfortunately neither of the girls could give any better description of the offenders so their apprehension is unlikely.

The answer is don't display your property particularly mobile phones or jewelry

I have just heard that there was a fight involving a number of youths coming out of one of the local pubs last evening.

Apparently an argument started inside the pub where things started to get quite nasty and the landlord with the assistance of some of the regulars ejected the troublemakers and telephoned the Police.

It was a good job that he did or things would really have turned uglyer than it did, as it was two youths were quite seriously injured during the ensuing fight and had to be taken to hospital and a total of five of the youths were arrested for various offenses.

What is the matter with the young of today, I sometimes despair

Another night of crime, apart from the usual burglaries we have come to expect there were also four motor vehicle crimes.

Two thefts from motor vehicles, one theft of motor vehicle and one criminal damage to motor vehicle.

It is very difficult to adequately protect your vehicle as most have to leave their cars on the street and not always in front of your own house because of the lack of parking. One vehicle had the rear off side window broken and a laptop stolen and the other was entered as it was believed to have been unlocked and some loose change taken from the ash tray. The vehicle that was stolen was a White Ford from out side the owners house and the damaged vehicle had its window wipers bent.

The next newsletter must include a reminder to all not to leave valuables in their vehicles and in plain site. These constant reminders must do some good after a while.

Amongst other crimes there have been two burglaries reported today, the victims being elderly women living alone. Both are members of NHW and both were the victims of distraction burglaries. Sadly neither of them put their chain on before opening the door and just accepted at face value that the visitors were from the gas company. Its so difficult to get through to the elderly that they should not open the door to anyone they don't know and that they should always ask for identification. I have spoken to both and advised them that in the future if they are not sure they must ask the caller to return when perhaps a neighbour could be with them. It is difficult but we must not give up on our elderly and vulnerable residents
