Keeping Safe

Many burglaries can be prevented. Most burglaries are committed by opportunist criminals who happen to see an insecure premises – and help themselves to the property inside. A few simple precautions can prevent you from becoming a victim.

Doors - Fit secure locks to all doors and fit a door chain or bar

Windows - Fit visible window locks, including rear or side windows and those above a low roof.

Alarms - Visible burglar alarms make burglars think twice; get specialist advice and consult your insurance company.

Timer Switches - Use these to turn on lights and radios when you are out to give the impression that your home is occupied.

Strangers - Be alert to strangers loitering in residential streets; if in doubt call the police.

Fire - Be aware of fire risks and means of escape. Make sure you have a smoke alarm fitted & tested monthly.

Spare keys - Never leave these in a hiding place such as under a doormat, in a flowerpot or inside the letterbox.

Valuables - Should be suitably security marked; if not practicable, take photographs of valuable items and keep a note of any serial numbers.

Outside:

Fit a strong, lockable gate across side passages.
Always leave garages and sheds locked.
Consider fitting an alarm to your garage or shed.
Keep any ladders locked.
Keep expensive garden equipment and furniture locked in a shed overnight or when you are away.
Provide good lighting and fit movement detectors.

When You Go Out

Close the curtains and leave a light on – or use time switches
If possible, fit good outside lighting
Lock all doors and windows, even when in – thieves see unlocked doors as an invitation to enter
Ensure that you lock all doors and windows when you are going out – even for a short time
NEVER leave your keys or car keys where they can be easily found!
If going out, always tell someone where you are going and when you will be back.
Carry a personal attack alarm (try any security shop for one or a DIY store)
Stick to well-lit roads and streets – plan your route beforehand
Carry your bag close to you with the opening to your body to make it more difficult for a pickpocket
NEVER accept lifts from someone you don’t know.
Always carry your mobile phone
NEVER hail a cab, always ring for a cab and ask for the name of the driver when booking
If you feel vulnerable – find somewhere with plenty of people and ask for help
Avoid using cash-machines at night (if possible)
If you are attacked – SCREAM as loudly as you can
